On a recent time travelling tour of the North I was strolling the promenade at South Shields eating my fish and chips with a plastic fork from a recycled paper carton when this block of concrete looked at me. It has a kind of squared off robotic stare with a soft smile. An antenna of course and a weighty left arm. It seems to guard yet invite access to the sea.
